July 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of Image Engineering's founding. What began as a small image quality consulting office in Cologne, Germany, has evolved into a global manufacturer of camera test equipment and a provider of camera test lab services. As we look to the future, we would like to take a moment to reflect on our journey thus far.
Back in 1995, CEO Dietmar Wueller began offering training courses in digital imaging to various German magazines, providing them with the resources to achieve the highest level of image quality. Thus, Image Engineering was born. Two years later, IE began offering camera testing services to these German magazines and any other companies looking to understand their image quality performance.

During our initial test service phase, we began designing equipment and test stands to enhance our image quality testing and soon realized that this equipment would also be beneficial for companies looking to establish their own camera test labs. In 2000, we built the first two custom camera test stands for Leica and Panasonic. Since then, we have provided hundreds of companies with the necessary equipment to enhance the performance of their digital devices.

As camera test requirements continue to evolve across different industries, we have expanded our portfolio to ensure that our clients can rely on us for all of their image quality testing needs. Looking back on the progression of our products is a confirmation of just how much the digital imaging world has changed in 30 years.
From basic digital cameras to the introduction of mobile phone systems and autonomous driving camera systems, the camera industry has undergone rapid change. More than ever, we are relying on camera systems to improve our everyday lives, from convenience to safety.
As it was 30 years ago, it is hard to imagine what the next 30 years will bring. We recognize that, regardless of the direction digital imaging takes, we will continue to expand and update our portfolio to meet the evolving needs of our customers.
From the beginning, our goal has been to provide companies with the resources to improve their image quality testing from the ground up. Since then, we have helped hundreds of clients worldwide improve their testing. We could not have accomplished any of this without them, and we extend our deepest gratitude for the trust they continue to place in us, year after year. Ultimately, our goal for the next 30 years will remain unchanged, as we continue to develop the right tools that enable digital imaging companies to create images that will change the world.
A New Beginning – A note from CEO Dietmar Wueller
Dear customers, colleagues, and friends,
Image Engineering is celebrating its 30th birthday.
Looking back, I was fortunate to be at the right time and in the right place, and to have had the right idea to work in digital photography in 1995. I was looking for a job in digital photography at a time when digital cameras were new and had a relatively low quality. Since nobody had a job, I started my own business. In 1997, I designed and built my own digital camera test stand, which led to the business Image Engineering is in today. And I can proudly say that my team at Image Engineering and I are running one of the market-leading companies in that niche market.
Now it is time for a change. I am handing the CEO position to my successor, Nicola Best. Even though we are going through some difficult times, given the world’s situation, I do not doubt that Nicola will lead the company to great success by providing a new perspective and vision for the future.
Let me take a moment to thank all of you for your support and great partnerships throughout the past 30 years. I will continue to work with the company as a consultant, providing support with standards and sales for the coming years, so we may still meet at future events.
In that sense, I look forward to continuing to assist all of you on your road to improved image quality testing. With that, I would like to wish a happy birthday to my IE team and offer a warm welcome to Nicola!
Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me, Nicola, or the team with any questions or concerns.
